- Car-pool. It’s common sense! Ask around the office for anyone who lives near you, and plan to car-pool. You both save, and you’ll probably enjoy the trip to work more! And have your kids car-pool with friends for school and activities.
- Map your route. Think ahead, and map out the shortest route to your destination(s). Use GPSor other mapping software. This could result in huge savings. Many of us think we know the shortest way to even common destinations, but check it out and make sure!
- Use cruise control when you are on the highway. This will keep your engine running at a consistent workload, which will reduce wasted fuel due to random acceleration and braking. And set the speed lower than you usually do.You’ll see the savings in your gas mileage immediately.
- Change your oil on a regular basis. When you keep the oil in your car clean you reduce the wear that is caused by friction in the moving parts of your car’s engine.
- Replace the air filter in your car. Studies at Fuel Economy suggest replacing the air filter in your car on a regular basis. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve the mileage that you get with your car by up to 10 percent.
- Turn off the Air Conditioning. Air Conditioning is great in the hot summer months, but only use it when you really need to and just use the blowers the rest of the time. At high speeds, keep your windows closed to reduce aerodynamic drag; opening the windows when driving at low speeds can increase fuel efficiency. Running the air conditioning when you don't need it will waste a lot of fuel.
